DVD, Ediciones, Barcelona, 2009.

Thinking of Wallace Stevens at the beginning of spring

There is so much that clings to us, and wants to keep warm.
Familiar things—the blue sky, Spring sun,
some dark musician chording the sacred harp,
His spittle of notes Pressed violets in his still darker book of revelation.
Why do they stay so cold, why
Do the words we give them disguise their identity
As abject weather,
sperverse descriptions, inordinate scales?
The poem is virga, a rain that never falls to earth.
That’s why we look this way, our palms outstretched,
our faces jacked toward the blue.

In praise of Thomas Hardy

Each second the earth is struck hard
by four and a half pounds of sunlight.
Each second.
Try to imagine that. No wonder deep shade is what the soul longs for,
And not, as we always thought, the light.
No wonder the inner life is dark.
Sounding, and sicced on like a dog,
they all go down and devolve,
Vowel-dancing, heart-sick,
Hoping for realignment and a space that won’t shine.
Unlike the October moon, Apached and blade-dazzled, smalled
Down the western sky
into Ovidian intersect
With time and its ghostly renderings.
Unlike the leaves of the ash tree, moon-treated and hanging on
For one day longer or so.
Unlike our shrunk selves, dripping like washing on the line.

Elogio de Thomas Hardy

Cada segundo la Tierra es impactada
por dos mil gramos de luz solar.
Cada segundo.
Intenta imaginarlo.

Charlottesville nocturne

The late September night is a train of thought, a wound
That doesn’t bleed, dead grass that’s still green,
No off-shoots, no elegance,
the late September night,
Deprived of adjectives, abstraction’s utmost and gleam.
It has been said there is an end to the giving out of names.
It has been said that everything that’s written has grown hollow.
It has been said that scorpions dance where language falters and gives way.
It has been said that something shines out from every darkness, that something shines out.
Leaning against the invisible, we bend and nod.
Evening arranges itself around the fallen leaves
Alphabetized across the back yard, desolate syllables
That braille us and sign us, leaning against the invisible.
Our dreams are luminous, a cast fire upon the world.
Morning arrives and that’s it.
Sunlight darkens the earth.
